Osterholm: El mundo está manejando la pandemia como si fuera ya a terminar

It took but 14 months after Zika’s first detection in Brazil for the virus to spread through Latin America and the Caribbean to Florida. So far, the threat has gone unchecked. And to be sure, after Zika, will come another global pathogenic threat—one, that public health experts worry, may do an even better job of outsmarting and overwhelming us. The question is whether technological advances can help us turn the odds. Can big data and genomic virus sequencing help us track emerging diseases, contain their spread and ultimately find antidotes for the next unknown pathology? Madrid (EFE).- El epidemiólogo estadounidense Michael Osterholm considera que el mundo respondió de manera muy lenta ante la pandemia de coronavirus y, ahora, la está manejando como si ya casi hubiéramos terminado, algo que estima que no es así.
Osterholm, fundador del Centro para Enfermedades Infecciosas (Cidrap) de la Universidad de Minesota (EE.UU) acaba de publicar una versión actualizada de su libro «La amenaza más letal» (Planeta), sobre la lucha contra las pandemias y cómo intentar evitarlas. En una entrevista con EFE consideró que lo esta pandemia «va a estar con nosotros durante varios años. Tiene que haber una vacuna segura y eficaz, que no creo que vaya a llegar muy pronto, así que tendremos que entender que, desafortunadamente, considerando todo el dolor, el sufrimiento, la muerte y la perturbación económica, está al comienzo, no al final».
